News: Who was Daddigon?

THE NAME 'DADDIGON' has received notable mention in recent songs performed by some of Jamaica's top international artistes like Sean Paul and Junior Gong. However, very little is known about who this individual actually was.

Daddigon, whose real name was Gabra Lambert, was well respected among his fellow musicians and friends for his conscious impact on dancehall music. Some say this was as a result of him being raised by the Twelve Tribes of Israel, a Rastafarian sect.

Sean Paul paid tribute to Daddigon in his song, Never Gonna Be The Same. Daddygon was apparently a fellow Dutty Cup crewmate who was murdered.

'Wish I could prevent all these end of times And bring back Daddigon a great brethren of mine I, sit an remember all the things that we spoke of All a di secret tings an all di tings we made joke of Still can't believe they took your life away But those who pull the trigger cannot take away

News: Morning end to 'Spring Bling'

AT NEARLY 5:45 A.M. on Saturday, after his fiancée D'Angel had backed up on him, bent over and wiggled away as they did One Man You Got and the audience howled, Beenie Man made an unwelcome announcement.

"De police waan lock it off, but a no my fault," he said, saying later that "de whole a we come ya fi work, but de man dem bum rush de ting an disrespec' de ting."

He was the start of the second wave of 'mass performers', Bounty Killer leading out the first some time earlier with Eagle and The Hawk, the stage getting filled with Movado, Schoolboy, Elephant Man, Vybz Kartel, Mr. Lex, Bling Dawg, Wayne Marshall, Hollow Point, Aidonia and Capleton.

Still, after Beenie's comment, 'Spring Bling', held at the Constant Spring football field, Constant Spring Road, went on a bit longer, Kip Rich storming on with Liquor, a huge forward coming from the substantial audience as Assassin chanted "a no me mek yu catty waan stray" and Merciless squeezing Ol Gallis on a rhythm. As Kip Rich deejayed "a de cell phone a gi weh bad man" in the early morning, a truck with bundles of cane and a gaggle of persons heading to market got caught up in the traffic outside the football field.

News: Beenie to Wed D'Angel

After months of rumour and speculation about the relationship between Beenie Man and D' Angel, the two have finally confessed that their relationship is heading to the altar.

D'Angel, in an interview with THE STAR yesterday, confirmed that she and Beenie Man had actually been engaged since January of this year, and that a wedding date had already been set.

"Yea man. It's a fact, but I never wanted it to come out like this - we not goin' confirm the date, but very soon, some time this year. He proposed in January when he flew all the way to England where I was, because he supports my music a hundred per cent. It happened in the back of a Limousine, I was so excited, I think he sat down and looked me in the eyes and asked me to marry him and I gracefully accepted," D'Angel recalled, adding, "I am looking forward to my wedding date, the date is already set and it will be a private wedding with family and close friends."

D'Angel says she is deeply in love with Beenie Man.

"I fell in love with him because he respects and loves me, and shows it (the love) how a true man ought to. I never wanted to get back involved with an entertainer because I had a previous rough relationship, but he (Beenie Man) is human too, all I wanted was love and he gave me that, and so I accepted his proposal and now I'm going to be his wife. If any man was treating me with the dignity and respect that Moses is treating me with now, I would already be married, but when you sit down in emotional stress and abuse for over a decade, you will get fed up one day," D'Angel said.

D'Angel was once the girlfriend of ace deejay Bounty Killer. Beenie Man and Bounty Killer have been two of dancehall's biggest rivals.

News: Sale of "Ready to Die" Album Put on Hold

If fans of the late rapper Notorious B.I.G. don't already have his classic album Ready To Die, they might have missed their chance.

A U.S. District Court jury decided in Nashville yesterday that the title track is in violation of copyright laws because it included portions of a 1992 Ohio Players song without permission or paying royalties.

The jury awarded $3.5 million in punitive damages and at least $733,000 in direct damages plus interest to the rightful owners of the song. But that's not all.

District Judge Todd Campbell ordered that, effective yesterday, the 1994 album Ready To Die and the individual song of the same name must basically cease to exist in the retail world: no more compact discs in stores, no more downloads from the Internet and no more radio plays. He said the decision was necessary to "vindicate the integrity of the copyright law."

News: Trinidadian Reggae Artists Stepping Up

Even in the midst of the Carnival season 2006, local reggae artistes were making their mark in T&T. Brendan “Isasha” Young performed his reggae love song Don’t You Know at Soca Broadway for its grand opening on January 1. Prophet Benjamin collaborated with 2005 Soca Monarch champ Bunji Garlin on the radio hit Fire Fe Dem.

In a nutshell, the reggae men are getting their names out there, getting their music heard.

And Trinis are loving each minute of it.

But why now? Where did these performers come from? Who inspires them? Is Trini reggae here to stay or is it a fad? Is it marketable internationally? Can it co-exist with soca? And how is local reggae really different from Jamaican reggae, if at all?
