News: King Yellowman From rags to records

HE WAS deserted by his parents, scorned at stage shows, chased away by pro-ducers, banned from the airwaves and developed skin cancer. A doctor even told him he would live only three years more.

That was in 1983.

Not many could overcome all these odds to become one of dancehall's greatest icons, but King Yellowman did. With an unmistakable deejaying style, he fused his pain and longings with his talent, which seemed a perfect recipe to produce hits.

"I remember they used to discriminate against me in the dancehall, because on a show we used to pass mic to mic and whenever me pass the mic, dem either take it and put dem rag over the mic or them kerchief. I guess you couldah call it scorn," Yellowman said.

EFFECT ON OTHER ALBINOS

His presence had an effect on other albinos.

"Is only when me come out that people like me started to show up, because them used to hide away from shame. But before the Tastee competition me used to go round to different producers to voice, but them used to run me away because them never believe innah me, or because of my skin colour them feel seh man like me cyaan do nothing," he said.

News: Kayne West gives Trinis a stellar performance

Eight time grammy nominated artist Kanye West delivered a performance that was nothing short of stellar on Thursday night (December 22) at bMobile's Touch the Sky concert.

The concert, held at the Jean Pierre complex, featured local acts Bunji Garlin, Machel Montano and Shurwayne Winchester who held their own.
But the night clearly belonged to West as he delivered hit after hit from his College Drop Out and Late Registration albums.

West thanked the thousands in the audience for supporting his albums noting how patrons sang song after song. Gold Digger, Slow Jams, Roses, Heard em Say, Touch the Sky were some of the songs Kanye belted out on his near hour date with an enthusiastic Trini audience.
He kept those faithful until 3am before belting out his much anticipated Jesus Walks. But they lapped up every minute of it.

The much-anticipated Smirnoff Experience showcase at the palisadoes Kart Track on Friday night was interrupted by system operators, who muted the microphones during TOK's performance of the hit song, Chi-Chi Man, the lyrical content of which expresses anti-homosexual sentiments.

The crowd, at first, did not realise what had occurred, since the audio system had been problematic throughout the night. The four-member dancehall act attempted to go into another song but promoters kept the volume down. In an attempt to address what had just occurred, clearly frustrated group member Craig T declared to the audience: "Don't ever make your morals be compromised by cowardice."

News: Peaceful Sting 2005 at Jamworld

THE MORNING sun waxed warm on the backs of the large crowd yesterday as thousands happily faced a searing alternating barrage of lyrics from Beenie Man and Vybz Kartel which ended Guinness Sting 2006.

No effort was spared in emphasising peace, love and unity, selector Glamour Wayne and MC Nuffy reading from a violence prevention manual for children. And with a few exceptions, a sole missile for Ghandi, as well as some gun lyrics from Aidonia, which ignited the audience, it was almost a church fun day, complete with a jumping for Jesus set by Prodigal Son.

There was peace even as Ninja Man, who came on before the closing pair, ignited a frenzy with "me cyan kill Bounty an' no kill Beenie" and demanded back his gun from Reneto Adams, who did not appear on stage, although he walked directly behind The Gleaner team at the rear of the audience during the concert.

News: Reggaeton

Recently, in doing the research for a major project now being planned for implementation in 2006, my team did an informal representative poll on popular knowledge of the historical spiritual leader of the Haitian revolution, a Jamaican known as Boukman Dutty; the numerous Jamaican settlements spread throughout Latin America; the extent of the spread, perpetuation and influence of Jamaican mento music on newer musical genres of the region.

The results were quite discouraging. It was also indicative of the Northern orientation and slant of our press, educational institutions and current cultural impulses.

Even more pronounced in our feedback however, was the almost total lack of popular knowledge among Jamaicans of the latest musical genre taking Europe, North America, South and Central America by storm, right under our noses- reggaeton. Bewilderingly, this is so even though this new form and style has very strong dancehall roots and the drum pattern adopted for most of its original tunes is a direct copy of Shabba Ranks' hit tune Dem Bow. So much so that at its genesis the genre was actually known as 'Dem Bow'.

News: TOK Mobbed by Fans

IT WAS LIKE a scene from the life and times of the late Elvis Prestley or the English rock group Beetles.

Like pop icons, dancehall group T.O.K. was mobbed by overzealous fans who wanted to meet, greet and hold their musical heroes.

On Saturday evening, November 26, children from St. Cecelia Prep rushed to the stage and surrounded the group as they were about to exit the venue. The children, who were screaming and flashing note pads, surrounded the group for autographs.

The occasion was St. Cecelia Prep's annual Musical Explosion which was held on the grounds of the St Andrew High School. The school's administration gave out awards to Jamaican artistes, groups and bands whom they deemed to have contributed to the upliftment of the local music industry.

This year's recipients included T.O.K., Katalys Crew and Dean Frasier, who was unavoidably absent. Desmond Young, president of the Jamaica Music Association, collected Frasiers' award from Aneita Holness-Williams, director of St. Cecelia Prep. Also getting an award was Reggae artiste Tony Rebel.

T.O.K. kept things quite clean and motivational for the kids who screamed and chanted as they went into the song Footprints. They later closed with their latest hit Tears to a big round of applause.
