This is the hottest dancehall song of the year and the fact that it was featured on So You Think You Can Dance Canada makes it very hard for anyone to argue the point.

You have to admit, the two non Jamaican dancers were really good.  They represented well.

Dancehall has come a long way but still has a long way to go!

One of the biggest songs in the dance hall right now here is Gyptian "Hold Yuh" produced by Ricky Blaze.  I have been pushing this song for a while. Ever since the first time I heard it I fell in love with it.

If you like this track you also have to check out the song by Ricky Blaze on the same riddim called "Just You and I"

This one was not recorded but done offline and is only available via the podcast.  Since there were a few weeks since the last episode there was a tonne of new music to post.  Specifically the Genesis riddim that was released this week.  You can read my post about it on the site earlier.

This is a brand new riddim produced by Daseca that was released today (2010-03-23) on iTunes.

This riddim has been getting a lot of hype in the dancehall circles as Daseca has kept it very tight in terms of who gets a copy of it before it was released.  It was premiered by Massive B on Hot 97 Sunday night and is getting a lot of good feedback.

I think one of the most interesting points about the release of this riddim is how it is being done.  Up until now the various riddims have been released on the internet and given to every DJ, sound system and radio personality on the planet for free.  Very little income was earned by the riddim and the producers made their money through other avenue’s.

The Genesis riddim is trying to change all of that by forcing everyone that wants it to purchase it from iTunes.  How successful this will be I am not sure.  The reggae/dancehall community has been spoiled with getting their music for free online and its only a matter of time before this is.  You can actually find it if you know how to look for it.

Even though other forms of music show up online, they still are able to achieve strong sales, so why won’t this work?  I remember when I use to spend $3.50 per 45 record (sometimes $30 a riddim) just to have the music.  To be able to buy the whole riddim online for $8 is very affordable.

I will be watching the outcome of this very closely.

Here is the track list from the riddim and as you can see it includes some of the biggest artists in the industry right now.

  1. TRACKLIST
  2. 1. RAIN SEVILLE – HOLD ON – 3:51
    2. SERANI – WHEN AM AROUND U – 3:52
    3. KIBAKI – JAH LOVE ME – 3:29
    4. MAVADO – STILL STAND UP – 3:43
    5. BUGLE – DON’T JUDGE ME – 3:29
    6. CHARLY BLACK – DEM ONLY CAN TALK – 3:32
    7. T’NEZ – DEYYA SAME WAY – 3:10
    8. AIDONIA – BUSS GUN CHARGE – 4.09

Here you can listen to the world premier from Hot 97 of the riddim to get a feel for it.  I’m feeling this.  What do you think?

I personally have not been able to see them do their thing live but hopefully the next time they pass through Toronto I will be there.  I’m a big fan and glad I caught this video.
