This is a brand new riddim produced by Daseca that was released today (2010-03-23) on iTunes.
This riddim has been getting a lot of hype in the dancehall circles as Daseca has kept it very tight in terms of who gets a copy of it before it was released. It was premiered by Massive B on Hot 97 Sunday night and is getting a lot of good feedback.
I think one of the most interesting points about the release of this riddim is how it is being done. Up until now the various riddims have been released on the internet and given to every DJ, sound system and radio personality on the planet for free. Very little income was earned by the riddim and the producers made their money through other avenue’s.
The Genesis riddim is trying to change all of that by forcing everyone that wants it to purchase it from iTunes. How successful this will be I am not sure. The reggae/dancehall community has been spoiled with getting their music for free online and its only a matter of time before this is. You can actually find it if you know how to look for it.
Even though other forms of music show up online, they still are able to achieve strong sales, so why won’t this work? I remember when I use to spend $3.50 per 45 record (sometimes $30 a riddim) just to have the music. To be able to buy the whole riddim online for $8 is very affordable.
I will be watching the outcome of this very closely.
Here is the track list from the riddim and as you can see it includes some of the biggest artists in the industry right now.
